About Matsuyama
Matsuyama is the principal city of Ehime and one of Japan's most historically significant regional hubs, famous for its castle, traditional arts, and literary heritage. Matsuyama Castle dominates the skyline from its hilltop position, and the castle grounds host seasonal events including cherry blossom festivals in spring, autumn foliage celebrations, and illuminated evening viewings. The castle complex also features a museum that explores the region's samurai past and cultural traditions. The city is the birthplace of Noh theatre, one of Japan's most refined classical performing arts, and maintains a vibrant theatre scene with regular performances at dedicated venues. Matsuyama-Hōjō Kabuki, a regional variation of kabuki theatre, is performed regularly and offers visitors an introduction to this dynamic art form. Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot springs, sits on Matsuyama's eastern edge and has been attracting visitors for over a thousand years — the historic bathhouse complex, with its distinctive red-tile roof and traditional architecture, was the inspiration for the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away and remains a focal point of local culture and public bathing tradition. The main Matsuyama Festival takes place in August and is a major summer festival featuring colourful processions, traditional Bon dance performances with one of the largest gatherings in western Japan, live music stages, and food stalls stretching through the city centre. The Atsumori Festival in July honours a legendary samurai warrior with traditional performances and reenactments. Spring brings cherry blossom celebrations at the castle grounds and throughout the city's parks, while the Poetry Festival celebrates the work of Matsuyama's most famous literary son. The city has a strong café and restaurant culture, with local specialities including Matsuyama ramen, citrus fruits from the surrounding region, and fresh seafood from the nearby coast. The Dogo area, surrounding the historic hot spring, has been revitalised with galleries, museums, and restaurants while maintaining its traditional character and historic atmosphere.
