Chichibu Night Festival (Chichibu Yomatsuri) 2026
About this event
What this is
The Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan's three great float festivals, held annually on December 2nd and 3rd at Chichibu Shrine in Saitama Prefecture. Dating back over 300 years, this UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event features six massive, ornately decorated floats and kasaboko (umbrella-shaped floats) illuminated by countless lanterns as they're pulled through the winter streets. The festival culminates in a dramatic ascent up a steep hill to the shrine, accompanied by traditional music and spectacular fireworks that light up the night sky. This winter spectacle celebrates the annual meeting of the shrine's female deity with her male counterpart from a neighboring mountain.
Who should go
This festival attracts those who appreciate traditional Japanese culture at its most dramatic and visually stunning. The combination of massive illuminated floats, winter atmosphere, and explosive fireworks creates an electrifying energy that appeals to photographers, culture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking an authentic matsuri experience away from Tokyo's crowds. Expect large crowds of up to 200,000 visitors, so arrive early in the afternoon to secure a good viewing spot along the parade route before the main evening procession begins around 5 PM.
