Chichibu Night Festival 2026UNESCO Float Matsuri in Saitama

What this is

The Chichibu Night Festival (秩父夜祭, Chichibu Yomatsuri) is one of Japan's three great float festivals, held annually on December 2nd and 3rd at Chichibu Shrine in Saitama Prefecture. Dating back over 300 years, this event holds UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status alongside the Gion Festival in Kyoto and the Takayama Festivals in Gifu. Six enormous, ornately decorated floats and kasaboko — tall umbrella-shaped floats — are illuminated by hundreds of lanterns and pulled through the cold winter streets in a breathtaking nocturnal procession. The festival culminates in a dramatic ascent up a steep hill toward Chichibu Shrine, accompanied by traditional music and a spectacular fireworks display. At its heart, the festival celebrates the annual mythological meeting of the shrine's female deity with her male counterpart from a neighboring mountain.

Who should go

This festival is ideal for photographers, culture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking an authentic, large-scale matsuri experience well outside the usual Tokyo tourist circuit. The combination of illuminated floats, winter night air, traditional music, and fireworks creates an atmosphere that is simultaneously ancient and electrifying — unlike anything found at a summer festival. Families with older children will find it memorable, though the dense crowds and late evening timing make it less suitable for very young children or those with mobility challenges. Arrive in the early afternoon — by 2 or 3 PM at the latest — to claim a good viewing spot along the parade route before the main procession begins around 5 PM.

Good to know

The festival takes place on public streets and the grounds of Chichibu Shrine, so there is no admission charge — simply show up and find your spot. Some elevated paid viewing areas or reserved bleacher seats may be available through local tourism bodies, but the street-side view is excellent and free. Chichibu is a small town and its train stations become severely congested on the night of December 2nd; the last trains fill rapidly, so either book accommodation in Chichibu in advance or be prepared for a long wait at the station after the fireworks. Most food and souvenir stalls are cash-only, so withdraw yen before leaving Tokyo. The fireworks finale typically begins around 10 PM and lasts roughly 20 minutes — staying for this is strongly recommended, as it is one of the most dramatic moments of the entire festival.
