Hamamatsu Festival 2026
About this event
What this is
The Hamamatsu Festival is one of Japan's most dynamic spring celebrations, held annually during Golden Week in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Dating back over 450 years, it originated as a celebration for the birth of the eldest son of a feudal lord and has evolved into a citywide spectacle. The festival features two main components: daytime kite battles where neighborhood teams fly massive traditional kites (some up to 10 meters wide) and engage in aerial combat by cutting opponents' strings, and nighttime palace float parades accompanied by taiko drumming and traditional music. This event showcases the fierce community pride of Hamamatsu's 174 neighborhoods, each represented by distinct kite designs and ornate festival floats.
Who should go
This festival appeals to visitors seeking high-energy traditional Japanese celebrations with a competitive edge and deep community involvement. The atmosphere is boisterous and participatory, with crowds cheering for their neighborhood teams during the kite battles on Nakatajima Beach and following the illuminated floats through city streets at night. Families, photography enthusiasts, and those interested in authentic local traditions will find the spectacle rewarding. Arrive early at the beach for the best viewing spots during kite battles, and bring sunscreen as the sandy areas offer little shade.
