Held annually at Yatsushiro Shrine (Myoken-miya) from the evening of May 31st through June 1st, this traditional festival dates back to the early Edo period. According to legend, residents created an ice storage facility on nearby Mimuro Mountain to preserve winter snow, which they would present to the shrine to pray for the safe summer of Hosokawa Sanai (Tadaoki), a retired feudal lord living in Yatsushiro. Visitors flock to the festival to eat the exclusive "snow mochi" (yuki mochi) sweets, believed to protect against illness and bring good health throughout the year.
