Nachi-no-Ogi MatsuriAncient Fire Festival in Wakayama 2026

What this is

The Nachi-no-Ogi Matsuri (Nachi Fire Festival) is one of Japan's three great fire festivals, held every July 14 at Kumano Nachi Taisha — a UNESCO World Heritage shrine nestled deep in the mountains of Wakayama Prefecture. The festival has roots stretching back over 1,800 years and reenacts the legend of the shrine's kami descending from the sacred Nachi Falls to their current enshrined location. Twelve enormous pine torches, each weighing 50–60 kilograms and standing more than two meters tall, are carried by white-robed bearers who use them to ritually purify twelve portable shrines (mikoshi) representing the resident kami. The ceremony unfolds against the dramatic backdrop of Nachi Falls — Japan's tallest waterfall — creating a collision of fire and cascading water that ranks among the most visually and spiritually powerful religious spectacles in the country. As part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, the entire setting carries UNESCO World Heritage status, lending the event extraordinary historical and cultural weight.

Who should go

This festival is ideal for serious cultural travelers, Shinto enthusiasts, and photographers who want an authentic, deeply rooted religious experience far removed from mainstream tourist circuits. The remote mountain setting and the raw physicality of torch-bearing priests in white robes create an atmosphere of ancient devotion that is genuinely rare in contemporary Japan. History lovers and pilgrimage walkers who have explored the Kumano Kodō trails will find this festival a profound culmination of the region's sacred character. Arrive early in the morning — the mountain location offers limited viewing space and the main torch-lighting ceremony takes place around 2 PM, so good positions fill up well before then.

Good to know

This is a free, open-air religious ceremony — no tickets are required, but arriving early is critical as viewing space on the mountain is genuinely limited. The nearest train stations are Kii-Katsuura and Shingu on the JR Kisei Line; from either, take a Kumano Kotsu bus to the Nachi-no-Taki stop (roughly 25–30 minutes). Driving is possible but parking near the shrine is extremely limited on festival day, so public transport is strongly recommended. Bring cash — the surrounding area has few ATMs and most stalls and shops are cash-only. The stone staircase leading to the shrine has several hundred steps, so factor in extra time and energy, especially in July heat. Photography of the ceremony is generally permitted from public viewing areas, but be respectful of the religious nature of the ritual and follow any instructions from shrine staff.
