Saga Emperor Festival — event in Kyoto

Saga Emperor FestivalShrine Festival in Kyoto 2026

Held at Umenomiya Shrine, this festival honors Emperor Saga, who completed Heian-kyo and promoted the development of Japanese court music (gagaku). Traditionally held on the emperor's death anniversary (August 28), it now takes place on the last Sunday of August. The festival features traditional performances including the Umetsutsu Rokusai Nembutsu Dance and Bon Odori (summer dance), with food stalls opening in the afternoon. The Rokusai, a traditional Kyoto performing art, is a highlight of the event.
