Historically, the sacred portable shrine was permitted to enter Edo Castle, where successive shoguns from the third shogun Iemitsu onward paid their respects—earning it the title "Tenka Matsuri" (Festival of the Realm). The spectacular "Shinko Matsuri" procession, featuring an elaborate royal pageant through central Tokyo, is held only in even-numbered years.
