Sawara Grand Autumn Festival — Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival — event in Tokyo

Sawara Grand Autumn FestivalUNESCO Float Parade in Chiba 2026

What this is

One of only a handful of Japanese festivals to earn UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, the Sawara Grand Autumn Festival sends enormous wooden floats — topped with 4-metre-tall figures and covered in intricate Kanto-style carvings — rolling through the preserved Edo-period canal streets of Sawara, a town so well-preserved it earned the nickname 'Little Edo.' The accompanying music is recognised as one of Japan's three great festival musical traditions, making this a rare convergence of visual spectacle and living sonic heritage. With over 300 years of continuous history and designation as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, this is far more than a regional parade.

Who should go

Anyone with an interest in traditional Japanese culture, history, or craftsmanship will find this genuinely rewarding. Families, photographers, and first-time visitors to Japan looking for an authentic matsuri experience outside the major cities will get a lot out of it.

Good to know

Entry to watch the festival procession is free and no tickets are required — simply arrive at the streets around JR Sawara Station and follow the crowds. The festival takes place across the historic townscape so there is no single fixed grandstand; moving between viewing spots is part of the experience. Food and souvenir stalls line the route and operate on cash, so bring yen. The area around Sawara Station can become very congested on festival days — trains on the JR Narita Line may be crowded, and arriving by 9:00 is recommended to find a good position before the floats begin moving. Sawara's historic district is compact and walkable, but the cobbled and narrow streets can be difficult with pushchairs during peak crowd times.
