Sunari Festival — event in Nagoya

Sunari FestivalTraditional Shrine Festival in Aichi 2026

The Sunari Festival is a UNESCO-registered intangible cultural heritage event held by Tomiyoshi Takehaya Shrine and Hachiken Shrine. The festival features decorated festival boats (danjiribune) and sacred reed-throwing rituals. On the evening of the first day, boats adorned with festival music travel upriver, and a unique bridge-raising ceremony allows passage. The next morning, spectators receive flowers thrown from the boats—believed to bring good fortune and protection from misfortune. This 100-day festival cycle, from July through October, is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
