About Takamatsu
Takamatsu is the relaxed, sunlit capital of Kagawa, positioned on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea — one of Japan's most beautiful coastal regions. The city itself has a distinctly Mediterranean feel, with tree-lined streets, waterfront promenades, and a laid-back atmosphere that contrasts with the intensity of more crowded cities. Ritsurin Garden, one of Japan's three most celebrated landscape gardens, sits at the heart of Takamatsu and hosts spectacular seasonal illumination events, transforming traditional garden design into magical evening experiences. The garden's seven hills and thirteen viewing points create constantly shifting perspectives, and each season brings new events — spring celebrations for cherry blossoms, summer moon-viewing events, autumn illuminations highlighting the changing foliage, and winter light displays. The Setouchi Triennale is the centrepiece of Takamatsu's cultural calendar — this internationally celebrated contemporary art festival is held every three years across dozens of islands connected by ferry from the port. Islands like Benesse Island, Naoshima, and Teshima feature major art museums and installations, making the triennale a pilgrimage for art lovers from around the world. The festival combines museums, outdoor sculpture parks, performances, and site-specific artworks that engage with the islands' history, landscape, and communities. Beyond the triennale, Takamatsu hosts regular cultural events: the Takamatsu Matsuri in August features traditional music and dance, while the city's theatre district offers classical and contemporary performance throughout the year. The harbour district has been revitalised with cafés, galleries, and food markets celebrating local Kagawa cuisine — udon noodles are the local obsession, with dozens of restaurants competing to perfect this simple dish. Spring cherry blossom season draws crowds to parks and temple grounds throughout the city, while summer brings fireworks festivals and night markets.
