Events in Akita Region

Akita Prefecture is defined by its Akita Inudog breed — a powerful working dog breed indigenous to the region — and by the Kanto Festival, one of Japan's most physically demanding and dynamic summer celebrations. The Kanto Festival, held in August, features teenagers and young adults balancing tall bamboo poles covered with paper lanterns on their heads, hips, shoulders, and hands in increasingly acrobatic displays. The poles can reach twelve metres in height and weigh dozens of kilograms, requiring precise coordination and strength to balance. The festival has been celebrated since the Edo period and represents a rite of passage for young men in the region. Akita's inland mountain valleys are known for their onsen (hot spring) culture, with numerous bathhouses and seasonal spa festivals. The prefecture's winters are among Japan's harshest, and traditional snow sculpture festivals celebrate the landscape. Akita's position on the Japan Sea coast means fishing traditions and marine-connected festivals throughout the year — squid-catching seasons, fish markets, and seafood celebrations feature in the event calendar. The city of Kakunodate preserves samurai townhouses and holds historical reenactment festivals celebrating the region's feudal past.
