Events in Aomori Region

Aomori sits at the northern tip of Honshu and represents Japan's most rugged northeastern edge — a landscape of deep winter snows, stark mountains, and isolated coastal villages. The Aomori Nebuta Festival in August is one of Japan's most visually spectacular and historically important summer festivals, featuring enormous illuminated floats depicting scenes from classical theatre and mythology. The floats can reach eight metres in height and require hundreds of participants to propel through the streets. Participants chant traditional rhythms while dancing beside the floats, creating an atmosphere of controlled chaos and collective energy. The festival has been celebrated continuously for over three hundred years. The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival in spring transforms the castle grounds into a spectacular viewing location with over five thousand flowering trees. Lake Towada in the prefecture's interior is surrounded by hot springs and forest hiking trails, generating seasonal events around nature appreciation and outdoor culture. The prefecture's geographic isolation and harsh winters have created a distinct local culture and food traditions — scallops, squid, and local apples feature prominently in the regional cuisine and festival celebrations.
