Events in Gifu Region

Gifu Prefecture is historically defined by samurai culture — it was a power base for several major feudal lords during Japan's medieval period — and by the ancient art of cormorant fishing (ukai) on the Nagara River. Takayama, a historic town in the prefecture's northern mountains, preserves Edo-period merchant houses and holds the Takayama Matsuri twice yearly (spring and autumn), featuring ornate festival floats and traditional performances. The festival is considered one of Japan's most beautiful and pristine matsuri celebrations. The Nagara River ukai (cormorant fishing) tradition remains active and attracts visitors who watch fishermen in traditional costume work with trained cormorants to catch fish — a practice unchanged for over thirteen hundred years. The prefecture's mountains are dotted with onsen (hot springs) and small village shrine festivals. Gifu Castle dominates Gifu city and hosts seasonal events and illuminations. The prefecture's location in central Chubu means it experiences dramatic seasonal changes reflected in its event calendar: spring cherry blossoms, summer water festivals on mountain rivers, autumn foliage in mountain valleys, and winter snow celebrations in highland areas. Gifu remains one of Japan's least-visited prefectures by foreign tourists despite possessing profound cultural heritage and natural beauty.
