Events in Saitama Region

Saitama is often dismissed as a commuter prefecture, a place where Tokyo workers return to sleep — but that reputation obscures a genuinely rich local event culture rooted in centuries of merchant and agricultural tradition. Kawagoe, an hour from central Tokyo, preserves an Edo-period warehouse district that feels frozen in time, with kura — traditional storehouses — now converted into museums, galleries, and shops. The Hikawa Festival held here each October rivals anything in Kyoto for sheer spectacle: ornate floats that weigh tonnes are pulled through narrow streets by teams of men whose coordination must be precise to navigate the turns. The mechanical puppets that dance atop the floats — karakuri — represent a craftsmanship tradition that stretches back centuries. Chichibu, further north in the prefecture's mountains, hosts the Yomatsuri each December — one of Japan's most dramatic night festivals, in which massive lantern-lit floats are paraded through the streets in near-freezing temperatures, creating an almost fever-dream atmosphere. The mountain valleys around Chichibu hold Shinto shrine ceremonies that see virtually no foreign visitors. Most Tokyo-based travellers never make it past Omiya Station on the commuter line. Those who venture into Saitama's smaller cities are regularly surprised by what they discover — a prefecture with more depth than its reputation suggests.
